Modernist School in Vamos

The school is located in the centre of the village of Vamos, on the site of the former Vamos “seraglio”, the local Turkish command post. It was constructed in the context of the educational reform of 1929-1932. The High School was transferred to the new building and began operation in 1936-1938. Both the main building and the courtyards were designed according to the principles of the Modern Movement of New Architecture in Greece.

In 1949 the south wing was added as a donation by D. Lambrakis, while in 1961 the upper storey of the south wing was constructed with funding by Emmanuel Kelaidis. Today the building houses the Vamos High School.

In 1930, the Greek State contracted the Swedish company Aktiebolaget Kreuger & Toll to construct state school buildings.

The educational reform was carried out by the Liberal government during the premiership of Eleftherios Venizelos. It was imposed by shifting circumstances including the political chaos caused by Greece’s defeat in Asia Minor and the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, the country’s entry into the international market and the influx of foreign capital. The new educational system was called upon to serve the emerging socioeconomic conditions. The main goals of the new programme were to combat illiteracy, which was very high, particularly among women and minorities, and to promote “practical education” and “awareness of the elements of Modern Greek culture”.

As part of these efforts, kindergartens were established; six-year, uniform and compulsory primary school education was introduced for all children; night schools were founded for those who had not finished primary school, as were schools and classes for children with special needs; and lower vocational schools were established, providing two- or three-year agriculture, commerce, craft and home economics courses. These last, however, functioned in name only, as the necessary state funding was not provided.

During this period, primary schools became co-educational.
